getting started

for parents of
beginners
Since the parent's involvement is the key element in the success of Suzuki Method, we begin with four to six lessons that are only for you, the parents of the beginning student. After this course, we will find another time to schedule lessons, which you will attend with your child for the remainder of the year. After nearly 30 years of teaching, I firmly believe that these classes with the parents alone are one of the essential ingredients that help every parent learn to be an effective "practice partner" for his or her child.
If you are planning to take the parent classes and start violin with your child, or if you simply want to learn more about Suzuki Method, you can familiarize yourself with the philosophy of the Suzuki Method by reading Nurtured by Love, by Dr. Shin’ichi Suzuki. This inspiring book is usually available at public libraries or you could purchase a copy through Johnson String Instruments or Shar Music Company.
You should also begin to form a home environment as conducive as possible to success by daily playing a recording of Volume 1 of the Suzuki Violin School (also available from Johnson String Instruments or Shar). Daily listening is an essential part of the Suzuki approach and can not begin too soon.
for parents of
NON-beginners
I currently have openings for non-beginners, meaning students who have already had a little or a lot of experience with the violin. Though I specialize in Suzuki Method instruction, I am also able to offer a traditional approach where appropriate. I have had extensive experience working with students at all levels–from beginners to intermediate to major concerti.
If you are the parent of a non-beginner–at whatever level–and are interested in enrolling your child, please contact us to set up a time for an interview lesson. At the interview lesson, I can begin to assess your child’s level of development and offer you ideas about how I could go about furthering your child’s potential. After this lesson, you and your child go home to decide if you’d like to work with me.
Tuition for interview lessons is the same as tuition for regular lessons: $80 for one hour; $60 for 3/4 hour; and $40 for 1/2 hour.
You should NOT purchase a violin yet.
